Industrializing and globalizing feverishly, the country has now become a global leader in the industries of technology, electronics and automobile manufacturing. This massive collective attitude of worker productivity and over-commodification is aptly given the name “빨리 빨리”, which translates to “hurry, hurry”. In the name of maximizing profit margins, this hustle-culture mentality has lifted many above the poverty line, but like many examples of the unchecked pursuit of capitalist gains, has resulted in side effects. Income inequality is the highest it has ever been in South Korea and the country exhibits the lowest birth rate and highest suicide rate among the entire OECD. Workers control their small cube of commerce, pumping out food, goods and services as quickly as possible. At the same time, slivers of stillness emerge from the bedlam. The more I attempt to document the chaos, the more idle moments of calm appear and disappear, like some strange paradox or twisted version of the observer effect. What emerges is a fragile balance between seemingly incompatible forces: productivity and rest, turmoil and peace, concrete and nature. pervasive fascination with the ubiquitous yet humble Asian market. As many children of first-generation immigrants can corroborate, I grew up with the idea that there was an innate link between the food around me and my cultural identity. It was one of the ways that the realization first came to me that I was different from others. I’ll forgo the tired anecdote of the stinky lunch box and the grating laughter of teasing children. My memories of the weekly visits to these cultural gastronomic enclaves with my mother are early enough that the scenes place me sitting in the cart, facing backwards, my feet dangling. The colours and smells stream past like warp-speed star trails of silkworm pupae and pickled mustard greens. Immersed in the din of languages that crackled with energy and crisp, staccato-like enunciation, juxtaposed to the round, drawn-out timbre I heard from the tongues of my teachers and friends and neighbours and strangers and my own, sometimes. In my dreams, I see round rectangular tins of SPAM sitting neatly next to stacked cans of water chestnuts and bright red bottles of Heinz ketchup beaming proudly next to fiery crimson jars of Lao Gan Ma. The Americans gave us SPAM and their cheese and weapons and tactics. We made budae jjigae and crossed oceans, arms stretched out towards the promises of prosperity that beckoned and winked. Generations later, in aisle eight of Lucky Dragon market, or H-Mart, or Kim Phat grocery, we gaze at neat rows of colourful sustenance and ruminate on the journey that a single tin of mechanically samlee.photo https://samlee.photo/Memories-and-Piety Memories and Piety Memories and Piety is an investigation of the link between places of worship, religious practice and memory. Repetition, memorization, chants and ancient texts, all basic motifs of most faiths, have an innate link with time and memory. This work draws attention to that link and challenges audiences to consider the implications these spaces can hold. The photographs were made using a large-format view camera, a process which demands attention and concentrated intention. This approach facilitates a slower pace of working, compelling the photographer to spend extended time in the space. Rejecting clichéd images of the grandiose and the architecture of the monumental, this work carefully seeks out the silent corners of temples, mosques and sanctuaries, opting instead to probe into the more subtle and intangible qualities of time, memory and consciousness that imbue these sacred spaces. The documented scenes are intentionally devoid of people, but exhibit signs of human activity. The presence of life implied but not directly shown is used as an underlying framework to question whether these spaces are activated by a congregation or by something else entirely. The intended viewing for the work is in the form of large-scale prints, inviting the viewer to enter the scene and occupy the space as the sole human participant. <img width="9039" height="7231" samlee.photo https://samlee.photo/Exodus ExodusExodus documents the historical consequences of neo-colonialism and resource extraction in Cornwall, ON. Once a thriving industrial town, the departure of major manufacturing plants has resulted in a period of economic downturn and severe environmental impact to the St-Lawrence River. &nbsp; Set against the backdrop of a failed idealization of the American Dream, Exodus presents a portrait of a town, but also reveals evidence of the social and ecological scars left behind by the arrival of capitalist industry to the St-Lawrence River. Inviting audiences to reflect on similar patterns in other colonized regions, this work surveys just one example of many industry towns dotting the continent, forced to pick up the fragments of a shattered dream and forge a new identity for the future. By presenting images made in the current day alongside archival photographs made available through a partnership with the Cornwall Community Museum &amp; Archives, this work acts as an additional data point along a timeline that is still being written. The archival photographs present an idealized version of Cornwall; a rose-coloured tint carefully applied over the hopes and dreams of nuclear families and low interest rates, while the photographs taken today reveal an honest and stark look at the results of that same promise, fast-forwarded by a few decades. What results is an undeniable begging of the question: what comes next? Whether Cornwall leaps forward with renewed dreams of hope and reconciliation, or spirals down into deeper chasms, the only certainty is that the story remains unfinished. <img width="1748" Korean-Canadian visual artist and documentary photographer who primarily looks for pictures in places that are flooded at least knee deep in collective memory and nostalgia. Through this work, he attempts to draw attention to the thin veneer of surrealism that has been carefully applied over all surfaces of the familiar and everyday. His practice employs these visual investigations through photography to suggest critiques of the social phenomena emerging from the effects of globalization, immigration and colonisation. His work mainly considers the Asian diaspora lens through which his experience is framed, but also keeping in mind his existence on unceded land. He prefers traditional photographic processes, shooting primarily on 6x7 medium format and 4x5 large format colour negative film and making optical c-prints in his colour darkroom.
